Description

This is a 1970 FJ55 that I bought as a project truck to restore like I did my 1974 FJ40. The original owner bought it in Colorado, and wanted to restore it and so began to disassemble it. He passed away, and it went to his son where it had sat for a few years. The son then decided he didn't have time or money to finish what his father started, so he sold it to me. Unfortunately, I have finally accepted that I too do not have the time or economic resources to finish it. It is currently kept mothballed in a pole barn, not outside in the elements.
This a complete truck, just disassembled. As I disassembled it I documented everything, cataloging every nut, bolt, and screw taken off of it. (Database in MS Excel) It ran strong when I took it apart, and the engine had been rebuilt so it does not require leaded gasoline. The original color (below the brown) was the sharp looking two-tone red and white.
I will not sugarcoat the truth: this truck will require a lot of work to complete it. This would make a great father-son project, a fun project to build then flip, or part it out if you really must do so.
Important items of note:
-Transmission is a manual three speed column shift (3-on-the-tree)
-Transfercase is a pull lever for High-Neutral-Low selection, with separate vacuum actuated front axle engagement switch.
-The frame is rock solid, with slight surface rust.
-The body has rusty areas in all of the typical places. You could, for example, cut out the rocker panels a put 3/16" armored rocker panels or rock sliders in.
-It will need new window glass, but since the windows are flat this should be very simple.
-The seats need reupholstering, but the metal in them is good.
-The plastic rear window gear is in good condition, and does not need to be replaced.
-The original weatherstripping will need to be replaced, but there is a bunch of new weatherstrip from the previous owner, and easily available aftermarket options.
-OEM Toyota jack is included, complete & working.
-New 1/4" steel channel for front and rear bumper fabrication.
For what vintage Land Cruisers are going for right now, this is probably your best bet to get in at the ground level and build a great timeless, unique, and capable four-wheel-drive Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55.
